My makeup essentials

Hey loves! Today is such a great day and I feel inspired and in the mood for some warm toned makeup. I consider makeup as a very powerful tool that can change our look with few touches, depending on the products and techniques that we use. It should be a small ritual of self-care, an enjoyable time used to enhance the beauty that we already have.  I should mention that I am no makeup artist, but I enjoy the process of doing my makeup daily, trying out different looks that I see online, in movies, in art and on women that inspire me.

I know that nowadays many of us are in home-office or wear a mask the whole day at work. I still think it’s quite important to try at least to live a “normal” life and I keep on using makeup, because it boosts my confidence and makes me feel a bit more motivated in the current times. In particular, since I am wearing the surgical mask the whole day, I’ve been having fun trying out different eye looks.

Today I will share my current makeup essentials. To achieve different styles, we really need few products: with all the different possibilities that the beauty industry offers us, we tend to clutter so many products in our cabinets which expire over time, and we will never be able to use up. I’ve been trying to be more conscious about the products that I buy, focussing especially on the ones that  I reach out to daily and that I always (used to…) bring with me when travelling.

Concealer/foundation

For my complexion, I have been doing spot-concealing since many years. On a daily basis, I just cover the imperfections of my skin and the dark circles with a medium coverage concealer. I like to be able to see the real skin texture to have a natural and luminous effect and I don’t mind if beauty marks are still visible, that’s why I don’t really use foundation. When I want to look flawless, I add a thin layer of foundation on my skin before concealing. I still try to avoid covering the nose to obtain a more natural effect.

Bronzer

As an Italian girl, I love to have a sun kissed look all year round. To achieve that, I apply bronzer on my cheekbone and on the sides of my forehead to give a slight definition. I don’t contour because I don’t want to artificially change my features since they are fine as they are.

Eye shadow palette

A versatile palette is the key to create so many looks. I usually prefer warm nude tones but with the correct palette it is possible to create romantic, edgy or natural smokey eyes. My perfect palette should have some nude matte colors, dark matte colors and shimmers like bronze, gold or champagne. My go-to eye makeup is soft and warm brown smokey eye with a bit of dark brown eye shadow smudged into my top lash line to give intensity to the glance. Sometimes, I also use eye shadows as eyeliners: by adding a drop of water to any powder nuance, you can obtain a creamy eye shadow that can be easily used to draw a cat eye with an angled brush.

Mascara and brows

If I had to choose only one eye product, that would be mascara. It gives an effortless intensity to the glance, and it’s perfect to pair it with a bold lip. I prefer formulas that achieve a volumizing effect without being too thick. I like my brows to be bushy. I don’t really do much with them, except for brushing them in place with the help of a spoolie brush and some neutral soap bar for sensitive skin.

Lip balm

Lip balm is definitely one of my everyday musts. I use it every time I need some hydration and as a base for the lipstick. What works best for me are the ones with natural formulas because they don’t irritate and clog the small pores around the mouth, promoting the formation of black heads. A great tip to have soft lips is to apply your favorite balm before going to bed.

Red lipstick

With the current times it’s quite difficult to wear a bold red lip. However, I still used red lipstick as a creamy eye shadow or as a cream blush on the apples of my cheeks for a refreshing pink touch. When I want a plumping effect, I tap it on my lips and smudge the edges for a very natural finish.

Let me know in the comments below what are your essentials!

With love,

Valentina
