Styling Oxford shoes

Hello loves! Today we talk fashion again. Lately, I realized how much I am gravitating towards classic and timeless garments instead of following trends: investing in classic pieces is a great way to achieve a more elegant look with less effort and, additionally, a way to reuse clothes season after season, because they don’t go out of fashion.

Oxford shoes are a piece in my wardrobe that I have been wearing every spring and fall since at least five years. For this piece, I was influenced by my mother’s style, which is quite classic and elegant but with a touch of androgynous taste. I ironically like to call them “the men repelling shoes” because no man likes them, but I never really care about it as long as I feel confident in them!

Oxfords were conceived in the 1640s, but only in the 1900s women started wearing them. In that time, in fact, women gained rights and freedom to express themselves politically and personally, and they started to wear these man shoes to fit a more comfortable lifestyle. It is astonishing that nowadays we have the freedom to wear whatever we like thanks to women of the past that fought for their right to express themselves in any kind of way.

With the current times, all fashion brands shifted their styles to comfortable and effortless, and oxfords are definitely an easily wearable piece without renouncing to elegance. In fact, after a year of wearing basic looks and lounge wear, I think we all want to go back to more sophisticated looks.

In particular, I have a derby brogue pair of shoes, which means that the shoes have open lacing, that makes them so comfortable, and have perforations as embellishments, which make the look more feminine. Also, their beige/tan color is suitable not only for light spring looks, but also for the darker ones.

There are different ways to style these shoes. It is possible to pair them also with midi skirts or dresses but, personally, I really like them paired with fitted trousers or jeans and a turtleneck knit or a blouse. To make the shoes notably stand out, I went for a total black outfit, made of a simple black turtleneck and velvet trousers to give some texture variation. For some color contrast, I also added my favorite colorful terracotta coat.

I find this look very comfortable but with a touch of feminine and masculine character at the same time. It was so sunny that even if it was a bit chilly, I decided to leave at home my boots and go for a transitional season piece.

Stay safe!
